How Long Is a Sleep Cycle?
The duration of sleep cycles varies as you progress through your sleep at night.
The first cycle is the shortest and generally lasts between 70 to 100 minutes. Later cycles range anywhere from 90 to 110 minutes.
How Many Sleep Cycles per Night?
We cycle through two phases of sleep: non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep.
The NREM phase occurs first and comprises three stages, including N1 (stage 1), N2 (stage 2), and N3(stage 3). During N1, the body is yet to fully relax, though there are light changes in the brain associated with falling asleep. In N2 and N3, the body and brain enter a more relaxed state, making it hard to wake up.
The REM stage happens after the N3 stage and it’s characterized by desynchronized brain wave activity, muscle atonia, and rapid eye movements. But we don’t stay in the REM stage throughout the night, rather we cycle between the NREM and REM stages.
